Steep Garden? This sleeper bed transformation will inspire you.
We get a lot of challenges thrown our way with garden transformations – none more so than when it involves a slope!
But if you think there’s nothing that can be done for your steep garden – then think again. Steep gardens can provide the perfect setting for creating depth, height and character. In fact, all your friends will probably be green with envy once they see what can be done.

The challenge
This garden was brought to us with a garden design all in place. So we set about sourcing all the materials and creating an installation programme. We had to work around a few supply problems, sourcing certain materials, but we were able to come up with solutions that suited our clients design and budget so we were never too far away from the original brief.
We also had to allow for some adjustments in measurements once we got down to the final installation – but as with all challenges we face in garden design and planning, we made it work.
The dirty work
The retaining sleeper beds needed to be installed into the ground, to prevent any movement as it’s a sloped surface so we had to use diggers to dig out the foundations. Once this was done, we installed the sleepers into place and used RSJs for additional support then painted them with black barn paint to achieve the look our client was after.
We created a smart new patio area and foundations, giving a dedicated space for eating and relaxing that won’t crumble or turn uneven once the ground gets wet. Then we set about creating smart edging around the garden, including granite stones around the patio area, and different coloured patio stones to create a textured look and feel. The dark and light stones complimented the black sleeper beds and contrasted with the plants we installed to give dramatic undertones.
We created steps from sleepers, also in black barn paint, to give easy access up to the raised sleeper bed area. All borders were also finished with black sleepers and finished with Scottish cobbles on top to look elegant.
Finally, we re-levelled, rotavated and re-turfed the lawn to give a smart finish to the garden and a great place to play and rest.
